Supercell announces Clash of Clans spinoff, ‘Clash Royale’

A dueling and card collection game set in the Clash universe

Kicking off the new year, developer Supercell Games has announced the soft launch of a new game set in the Clash of Clans universe — Clash Royale.

Capitalizing on the popularity of their hit mobile game, Clash Royale "brings together the royal family with your favorite Clash of Clans troops, sometimes with a few new twists." In this real-time game, you'll battle head-to-head in various Arenas against other Challengers for Trophies, Crowns, and glory.

"Clash Royale is all about head-to-head battle, and lots of it!" Supercell said. "Supercell has looked for a fun and engaging approach to player-versus-player gameplay on mobile for years, and we think we have finally found it."

Clash Royale is being developed independently of Clash of Clans, although several past members of the Clash of Clans team are founding members of Clash Royale. Supercell plans to keep the teams working separately, and the developer made it a point to emphasize that this is not Clash of Clans 2. "We will continue to develop Clash of Clans and Clash Royale as completely separate games, with two distinct teams!"

However, the developer did hint that new Clash Royale characters could be part of Clash of Clans in the future. "You never know what might happen! We’ll always develop Clash Royale and Clash of Clans as their own games, with separate teams, but we’re very excited about the opportunities to expand and build upon the Clash Universe."

Clash Royale will experience a soft launch tomorrow, January 4th, in select countries (Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Finland and New Zealand) for iOS. Supercell hopes to add more countries and platforms in the future.
