Valve announces a Steam mode that lets you play any game in VR

Kind of

Ahead of the impending launch of the HTC Vive headset, Valve recently unveiled Steam Desktop Theater Mode, an alternate form of Steam VR that effectively converts any game into a VR experience.

Experience really is the word. Steam VR Theater cannot and will not replicate the immersion of games built for VR from ground the group, but it will provide a virtual home theater of sorts. In essence, it gives players a massive virtual display on which to view and play regular games.

Steam VR Theater is currently in beta, RoadtoVR reports, and will be demoed at the upcoming 2016 Game Developers Conference. Valve already confirmed that the mode will work with VR headsets other than the Vive, tacit confirmation that the Oculus Rift will also be supported.

The GDC will also see Valve showcase its newly announced Portal-themed VR experiment, The Lab. Announced earlier this month, The Lab is described as a “compilation of VR experiments” illustrating the power of both VR and the Vive. Perhaps some of those experiments spawned Steam VR Theater.
