Nintendo takes back leaker’s early Nintendo Switch

Nintendo sent the Men in Black to find him.

A couple days ago, a random NeoGAF user by the name of hiphoptherobot claimed he had gotten a Nintendo Switch shipped to him early. People questioned his credibility so he posted a video of the console booting up and then a walkthrough of the menus. It gave us our first look at the system's UI and from the sounds of it, Nintendo was not too happy about this.

User hiphoptherobot reported via NeoGAF today that Nintendo tracked him down and retrieved the Switch without compensating him at all. His money was not given back and Nintendo did not say they'd give him any sort of replacement when the system officially releases.

"Not sure if I can really talk about it but I will say Nintendo has the console back and I am personally not in any trouble. Other than being out a console and the money I paid for it which really sucks with all the bills I have right now but it isn't going to be the end of the world or anything."

"Again, I probably cant talk about details but after knowing what happened I don't necessarily think Nintendo is wrong for wanting the console back and the people I dealt with have all been very nice and reasonable. And again, I am not in any trouble but didnt feel like pushing my luck by keeping the videos up."

Other NeoGAF users questioned how they could legally do this since it wasn't hiphoptherobot's fault that an unnamed retailer shipped it to him early. Turns out the Switch he bought was stolen.

"For the sake of clarification I will say that I don't think the person I got it from knew and therefore I certainly didn't know but somewhere down the chain some switches had "mysteriously disappeared". So while it was unknown to me, once I found out that it had probably been stolen I didn't feel comfortable keeping it."

One other NeoGAF member said they also had a Nintendo Switch a few days ago, but didn't release much more than a simple picture of the system. It's unclear what happened to his Switch or if he went off the grid to avoid the attention of Nintendo.

The Nintendo Switch releases March 3rd, 2017.
