Like it or not, there are going to be five Avatar movies when all is said and done, and if James Cameron gets his way, he will officially establish 5-film sagas as the new norm (a quilogy perhaps?). In any case, it sounds like in the midst of focusing on four films at once, that he has made things easier on himself by planning a single villain for all four films. And on top of that, he doesn't even have to look very far for him.

That's because he's bringing back Stephen Lang's Colonel Quartich from the original movie to terrorize Jake, Neytiri and the Na'vi again. And again, and again, and a fifth time too. This is despite the fact that the Colonel took two fairly hefty arrows to the chest, which should have ended him for good, but it looks like Cameron has other plans.
Cameron explained his decision in an exclusive interview with Empire.
"There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I’m taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey. But it’s not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherfucker through all four movies. He is so good and he just gets better. I know Stephen Lang is gonna knock this out of the park."
It's unclear how Cameron will that rabbit out of his hat, but you'd have to think Quartich should return as part machine or perhaps as a Na'vi, similarly to how Jake transferred his consciousness over.
Avatar 2 hits theaters on December 18th, 2020.
