Nintendo has released a new update for their arcade racing game Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch. The new update features Link’s attire from Breath of the Wild and adds a new vehicle as well. The Master Cycle Zero from Breath of the Wild. The new additions to the already fantastic racer are available right now for free as a game update.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Zelda Breath of the Wild are having a little cross-over event, thanks to this new update. The new content comes in form of a free update to owners of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Link has already been available in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe from the beginning, but this new content gives players the opportunity to dress the legendary warrior in its most current outfit, the Champion’s Tunic featured in Zelda Breath of the Wild.
The other and probably bigger part of the update is the addition of the Master Cycle Zero. A motorbike which was introduced to Breath of the Wild with the Champions’ Ballad DLC last year. The update also comes with new car parts, fitting the Breath of the Wild theme. The Ancient Tires and Paraglider parts.
Now, players will have the chance to race with the up-to-date portrayal of Link. A smart move by Nintendo to make a cross-over event like this between two major titles. This update comes only days after the head of Entertainment Planning & Development Division at Nintendo, Shinya Takahashi teased more updates for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Twitter.
Zelda Breath of the Wild was the highlight release alongside the Nintendo Switch release in March last year and went on to become not only one of the best-selling games on the system but the best selling Zelda game period. A mighty impressive feat for a launch title.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe followed the newest Zelda title on to the Switch only a month later and also become a hit, maybe even more surprising since the game was already available on Nintendo’s prior console for three years. But with the surprise success of the Switch, it didn’t matter whether Mario Kart 8 or Breath of the Wild were available on aother Nintendo console. It was the Switch were both titles became huge sellers.
Now, the question of course is whether other tentpole Nintendo games are going to receive similar cross-over updates like this one. We are certainly hoping.
