Ron Gilbert’s Scurvy Scallywags is a match-3 game for iOS

Ron Gilbert left Double Fine Productions earlier this month, and a recent post on his blog gives us a better idea of what he's working on now.

Gilbert most recently created The Cave, a platform-adventure game for consoles and PC. His next title is called Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG — "or SSITVTDTUSS:AMMTPRPG for short," he wrote.

This game, which is coming for iPhone and iPad and possibly Android, builds upon what Gilbert started previously with the project Realms of Gold, where pieces would drop from the side or bottom depending on the match — not just from the top.

This was before the success of Puzzle Quest, and at the time, publishers told the developer that no one would be interested in a match-three role-playing game.

Gilbert says Scurvy Scallywags now "collapses" the board based on the direction you swiped.

"An odd side effect of doing this was you could move pieces around the board," he wrote. "So unlike Puzzle Quest — and just about every other match-three RPG that sprang up after it — in Scurvy Scallywags you actually move your hero/pirate around the board and position her/him next to enemies to do battle. It creates this new layer to the matching that is a lot of fun."

Gilbert expects the game to debut in about a month or so.
