Ratchet & Clank movie coming to theaters in 2015, teaser trailer released

Sony's PlayStation exclusive Ratchet & Clank is finally getting a movie. Given the series' slapstick humor and intriguing sci-fi setting we have to wonder why this wasn't done sooner. Then again, when you look at how most games-turned-movies turn out, you begin to understand.

"The truth is, we’ve wanted to do a movie for a long time! Ratchet & Clank’s action, humor and galaxy-spanning adventures have really been the basis for a fantastic game series, and we think it’d translate perfectly to the big screen," said Insomniac Games senior community manager James Stevenson. Ratchet & Clank's first cinematic adventure will be a production of Blockade Entertainment and Rainmaker Entertainment.

Game developer Insomniac will play "a hands-on role with the film’s production, screenplay, character development, and animation consulting." Additionally, T.J. Fixman — writer of all recent Ratchet & Clank games — is handling the script for the film as well. Below is a brief plot outline.

Ratchet and Clank tells the story of two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind – a foolhardy “lombax” who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way they’ll learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity.
