3D Realms unveils Wrath: Aeon of Ruin old-school FPS in vein of Quake

Frag it like it's '99!

After a short teaser yesterday, 3D Realms today officially announced Wrath: Aeon of Ruin. The first-person shooter is taking heavy influence from the iconic first Quake game which was highly influential in kickstarting real 3D FPS games. Check out the trailer!

Yesterday 3D Realms grabbed the attention of shooter fans by teasing their upcoming game. All they shared under the ominous Twitter hashtag #unannouncedQuake1EngineShooter was basically that it’s using the original Quake 1 game engine and that it was going to be a shooter. Just name-dropping Quake was enough to make us excited. Add in the impressive catalog of shooter games 3D Realms had worked on and you have a recipe for something special.

You might have heard of some of 3D Realms’ past FPS games. Titles like Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, the original Prey and many more. The list of their work reads like a who’s-who of iconic shooters really. Lately, the company has found success in reviving old-school FPS genre with the excellent Ion Maiden. That game decidedly leans on the design philosophy of early FPS games like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, with it’s blend of 3D movement and 2D sprites.

Fueled by legendary Quake 1 technology, the veins of WRATH pump with the DNA of revered ’90s shooters. WRATH embraces the timeless elements of classic titles such as DOOM, QUAKE, DUKE NUKEM 3D, BLOOD, UNREAL and HEXEN and carries them into the 21st century.

Maybe then it doesn’t come as a huge shock that 3D Realms is following their winning ways into a more modern retro era with Wrath: Aeon of Ruin. This time, the origin of influence is without a doubt the original Quake with a fully 3D rendered game and even similar style. If you were a fan of the dark and gothic artstyle of Quake, you’ll fall in love with Wrath: Aeon of Ruin.

Wrath: Aeon of Ruin i set to release for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in early 2020.
