3DS lifetime sales surpass 11.5 million in U.S.

In announcing a riveting lineup of 3DS games in 2014, Nintendo has taken some time to recap the handheld's successful 2013. Although Nintendo refrained from announcing specific 2013 sales numbers, they did reveal that the 3DS "family" — which also includes the 3DS XL and 2DS — has surpassed 11.5 million units sold lifetime in the United States alone.

In September 2013, Nintendo revealed that more than 6.47 million 3DS units were sold during the year alone. While we're still awaiting an updated figure, the number at the time represented an increase of nearly 30 percent over the same time frame in 2012.

“Nintendo 3DS is a powerhouse with games and experiences that appeal to all kinds of players,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “We’re not slowing down in 2014. With more games featuring fan-favorite franchises on the way, the best days of Nintendo 3DS are still to come.”

Nintendo also revealed that more than 16 million 3DS games were sold in 2013 and looking at 2014's lineup, I don't see that number slowing any time soon. A look at the 3DS' upcoming schedule of releases shows Bravely Default on Feb. 7, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy on Feb. 28, Yoshi's New Island on March 14, and Disney Magical World on April 11.
