Fueled by the 1995 release of the Mortal Kombat movie and the low budget, low brow Highlander TV show that ran around the same time, there were a lot of early Millennials who rediscovered the 70’s flood of Kung Fu classics in their quest for more butt kicking. Classics like Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon and self-serious cheese fests like Jean Claude van Damme’s Bloodsport became easy go-to for kids looking for a fresh fix.
Looking to recapture the spirit of that obsession is New York based Jae-Lee Productions with their new game, Kings of Kung Fu. A throw back to the 90’s style 2D fighters, Kings of Fung Fu features 14 players and 15 stages as well as controller support and couch-play multiplayer. Each of the 14 characters has a fighting style individual to themselves, though fans of the cinema genre will be able to easily match up a given character to their real world inspirations such as Lee, Chuck Norris and Chia-Hui Liu.
The developer calls the game “a love letter to kung fu cinema firstly and a casual to mid core fighter secondly.”
King of Kung Fu is currently available on Steam for $4.99, a 50% discount which continues until July 2nd.
