Gearbox Software is a massive studio that has a lot of games under their belt but their most notable IP is the Borderlands franchise. The 4 player Mad Max-like co-op series with tons of guns, missions, and lovable characters has been somewhat dormant for a while.
After the release of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel in 2013, Gearbox has been pretty quiet on the future of the series outside of the occasional tease here and there. While it's obviously not dead because it's a major money maker, many are wondering when we'll get a Borderlands 3. Well, luckily it doesn't sound super far off.
This weekend at PAX West. Gearbox's Randy Pitchford teased that 90% of the studio is working on "the thing you want us to be working on." Fans have been super vocal about a new Borderlands, so that's obviously what he's referencing. Since such a large number of people are working on the game, we could see the game drop in 2018 or 2019.
Gearbox's parent company, Take-Two, revealed during a recent investor's call that there's a game slated for release between March 2018 and March 2019 which is likely Borderlands 3. It should also be noted that the other 10% of the studio could be a support team for outside work or it could be a skeleton crew working on a new Brothers in Arms game which was confirmed at E3 2017.
