Anthony Mackie had the best response when asked about an African-American director for Black Panther

Ya know something, I really love it when someone in Hollywood shows a little brains when discussing race or gender in the industry. Actor Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson (aka Falcon) in Marvel's Cinematic Universe, happens to be one of the smarter ones, it seems.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Mackie was asked his thoughts on the idea of Marvel hiring an African-American director for the upcoming film Black Panther. And he perhaps had the most sensible response I've seen in years to a question this bait-y.

"I don’t think it’s important at all,” he says. “As a director your job is to tell a story. You know, they didn’t get a horse to direct Seabiscuit!"

That right there sums up my entire feelings on the topic. But Mackie continued, "The thing is I don’t think the race of the director has to do with their ability to tell a story. I think it’s all about the director’s ability to be able to relate to that story and do it justice."

"I think men can direct women, and two of my greatest work experiences were with female directors. So I think it all depends. May the best man—or woman—win.”
