Atari confirmed that they were hard at work on a new console last month, but the confirmation didn't come with any additional details. Luckily, an email from Atari to fans has revealed the highly anticipated details on the console, which has begun to sound like a classic game emulator that will play some newer titles as well.
According to Atari, the Ataribox will allow the game company to "create something new, that stays true to our [Atari] heritage, while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.” Currently, the plan is to bring classic games, alongside "current content," on the Ataribox.
No further details on the games were given, however, Atari did show off how the Ataribox will look.
One version will feature a 'wood' front, inspired by the Atari 2600's wood paneling:
The other comes with a black front and red Atari icon, the back of the console is red:
Both versions feature SD card support, an HDMI port, and four USB ports.
Atari knows fans want more details, unfortunately, they are not prepared to disclose them.
“We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, pricing, timing,” says Atari. “We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring this to life, and to listen closely to the Atari community feedback as we do so.”
So… One day.
