Bethesda wants to make more mobile games after Fallout Shelter

Fallout Shelter was a runaway success for Bethesda. It was the studio’s first mobile release, yet it grossed $5.1 million in its first two weeks alone, going so far as to dethrone Candy Crush as top-selling app for a time. It’s no surprise, then, that Bethesda is interested in making more mobile games.

“It’s in your pocket, a lot of [the games are] free or easy to try,” Director Todd Howard told GameSpot. “So every time you’re playing, you’re thinking, ‘We could do one of these, I think we could do something special here.’ So we’re gonna do more.”

Howard didn’t specify what more will be, only that Fallout Shelter’s unexpected popularity forced the studio to reconsider its stance on mobile development. “Mostly we were concerned with [Fallout Shelter] being appropriate for who we are, meaning it’s got a bit more meat on the bone than other things like it,” he said. “But its overall popularity? We were not ready for that, which is a good problem.”

Howard also recently teased three “longer-term projects” from Bethesda that are “in many ways different” than what the studio has done before. Although another mobile game may not be among Bethesda’s top priorities, it’s possible we’ll see more Fallout Shelter-like spinoffs from the studio’s mystery projects.
