BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea — Episode One Review Round-up

Reviews are starting to come in for BioShock Infinite's first story-driven DLC, Burial at Sea Episode. Somewhat surprising is the pedestrian scores it seems to be receiving. Although BioShock Infinite enjoyed a heavy dose of nearly perfect scores, its DLC seems to be falling flat for most reviewers. Below are a few reviews for the highly anticipated DLC, which will be available tomorrow for download.

IGN – 7/10

"Though Burial at Sea Episode 1 may be a short vignette next to Infinite’s novel, it’s still one you aren’t likely to put down for the brief time it lasts — and it’s priced accordingly at $15."

CVG – 7/10

"The other overriding concern is how short Burial At Sea is. On the easiest setting, one can zoom through it in just over an hour and even those players who decide to rinse it on the hardest setting will find it clocks in at just two hours tops. Given how glorious it all looks and how well it plays, Burial at Sea feels shockingly short."

OXM – 7/10

"There's scope for a little exploration, in order to recover equipment kits, audio diaries and the like, but the glee of discovery is deadened by the clumsiness with which Irrational wheels on that obligatory Shocking Revelation. It does, at least, pave the way for a much more intriguing Episode 2. Let's hope a change of protagonist is enough to rescue this expansion from the doldrums."

Eurogamer – 7/10

"Part One of Burial at Sea is predicated on so many constants and variables that it will undoubtedly prove divisive. It feels all too brief, even as half of a two-part whole, but it delivers a rich storyline that builds to a suitably stunning climax."

IncGamers – 6/10

"A criminally short opening chapter that nonetheless offers a glimpse of Rapture at its opulent heights. The noir intentions are dispensed too soon, so the Booker/Elizabeth relationship and familiar combat have to see Burial at Sea through to its disturbing, perplexing climax."

GameSpot – 5/10

"Burial at Sea seems a prime example of the tail wagging the dog, and the result is an adventure with fantastic sights and sounds that don't come together in a meaningful way."

Destructoid 6.5/10

"I wasn't too impressed by Burial at Sea Episode One, mostly because it just doesn't add a whole lot to the overall franchise outside of the last 30 seconds, and it's simply not compelling enough. While it's quite possible that Episode Two will tie everything together in a neat bow and blow us all away, Irrational Games has yet to make a legitimate case for a return to Rapture."

Remember, this is only the first episode of a two-parter for Burial at Sea. While it doesn't quite live up to the expectations set forth by the original BioShock Infinite, let's hope the second episode rises to the occasion.
