Better fire up your Kindles and get caught up on your reading. American fantasy author Brandon Sanderson has partnered with video game developer Little Orbit to create an action-RPG based on his successful Mistborn trilogy. The game will act as a prequel to the series and arrive on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, and Mac in fall of next year.
The upcoming Mistborn: Birthright will feature an original storyline and dialogue from Sanderson and put players in control of Fendin "Fiddle" Fathvell, an arrogant nobleman who must quickly master the powers of Allomancy if he wishes to save his family from harm.
Little Orbit, which is also working on the Young Justice: Legacy game, approached Sanderson about adapting his series for the video games medium.
"I'm a huge fan of the series, and I cannot wait to get this into the hands of gamers," said Little Orbit CEO Matthew Scott. "Between the distinctive magic system, the story twists Brandon has planned for the game, and the rich depth of character skills, we're creating something very unique for players to enjoy."
Sanderson has experience in working with video games, having completed story development on Infinity Blade II and its associated novella, Infinity Blade: Awakening, last year. He admitted that expanding Mistborn into a separate medium was a possibility he's previously considered.
"I met with them [Little Orbit]. And I was impressed," Sanderson said today on his blog. "Not only did they have a love for Mistborn, they had more experience at this sort of thing than I'd originally assumed. The company is made up of people who have been in the business for a long time, and they had worked on a variety of games I really love. (They even have guys who were involved in the original Fallout and Baldur's Gate games.)"
The game's events will occur hundreds of years before the existing books, during the early days of the Final Empire.
