Brink has sold over 2.5 million copies

Developer Splash Damage recently revealed sales and earnings for their first-person shooter Brink.

CEO Paul Wedgwood told Gamasutra that the game is "estimated to have sold more than 2.5 million units worldwide, which at retail would mean that it's generated around $120-140 million in revenue."

"But of course, as an independent video game developer, we don't earn that kind of revenue, as we're not the publisher of the title," Wedgwood continued. "But we could see there was the potential to serve our fans content directly, and while we don't want to take anything away from what Splash Damage does, we wanted a vehicle that we can dedicate exclusively to that pursuit."

Splash Damage has consequently shifted its focus to the free-to-play model, forming the division WarChest and announcing its first endeavor, a strategy game for iOS called RAD Soldiers. Splash Damage is also working on two F2P (or "Free-to-plAAA," as Wedgwood calls theirs) games, one coming this year for PC and the other dated for 2013 on consoles.

"About half of Splash Damage at the moment is now working on entirely self-funded projects," Wedgwood said.
