Bungie: Destiny lacks cross-platform support to prevent unfair multiplayer

Destiny will be playable on two generations of PlayStation and Xbox, but the two won’t be allowed to mingle. Bungie engineer Roger Wolfson recently explained, in an interview with Digital Trends, that the reason for this is simply preserving the experience.

“I’ll speak for the hypothetical viewer,” Wolfson said. “I have a disadvantage sniping across the map because [my opponent with a next-gen console] is only two pixels on my screen and I’m four on his. You see that in the world of PC gaming, where people are always racing to the best video card to give themselves the advantage.

“Regardless of where the reality is, there’s definitely a perception among gamers that better hardware means you have an advantage. We don’t want to have to enter that fray, so to create the best, most level playing field, both actually and perceptually, we separated it by platform,” he concluded.

Despite this platform insurance, Wolfson asserts that the experience does not differ between generations. “There’s really no difference at all in loading, the action game is as fluid and as action-packed, there are as many combatants on the last-gen, the loading times are equivalent,” he added.

Destiny recently entered its beta period but has seen trouble due to network stress. It will release for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4 September 9.
