Activision announced today that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 established an all new five day worldwide sales record. This new record sits pretty at $775 million. The record exceeds the record of $650 million set a year ago by Call of Duty: Black Ops and $550 million two years ago by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. These sales, during the 5-day period, have out sold any theatrical box office, book, or other video games sale. The Call of Duty franchise is currently exceeding $6 billion in sales.
According to Microsoft, 7 million multiplayer hours were logged the first day of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s release date – November 8th, 2011. This is a 19% increase from Call of Duty: Black Ops at 5.9 million hours.
Can Activision continue this trend for its products? Is each game release a personal challenge to beat last year’s title? The developer has certainly set a trend in sales, only 2012 will have the answer if it will continue or not.
