Destiny is often described as a MMO shooter. Despite the gameplay elements associated with the phrase "massively multiplayer," Destiny can be enjoyed alone. Yes, other players will still appear in the game as part of this "shared-world" experience, but according to Bungie, you're never forced to actually party with them.
In a recent Q&A with fans, Bungie community manager DeeJ explained, "You can experience Destiny's story as a party of one, assuming you're that much of a badass.
"Destiny will never require you to team up with other people in campaign missions," he continued. "You'll see other players along the way, but you can choose to ignore them.
"That said, we think you'll find that playing with other Guardians is quick, painless, and a ton of fun," he added. "It's always your choice, though."
Bungie has certainly emphasized the team-playing experience early on — and I'm sure they'll continue to do so moving forward — but it's nice to know that you won't be forced to play with others. Honestly, though, I think multiplayer is going to be one of the game's strong suits. If you can get a solid core group of friends together I'm sure roaming the through the open world will be a blast. It's equally important that you are able to enjoy the game alone, though.
Yesterday, Bungie confirmed that a beta for Destiny will be made available in early 2014.
