Japanese publisher Capcom has announced that cult action-adventure game Onimusha is arriving on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch January 15, 2019. The Onimusha series was a mainstay during the Playstation 2 era and started of as mix of Resident Evil’s survival-action formula with a feudal Japanese setting.
Announced at Capcom’s blog, Onimusha: Warlords for current systems will feature a laundry list of modern features, such as updated backgrounds, characters and cut scenes. Modern widescreen support will also be available for the first time, alongside updated camera and controls. On top, the game is receiving an entirely new soundtrack and Japanese voice-overs.
Onimusha: Warlords originally released in early 2001 for the legendary PS2 console. Three more entries into the series followed, with each getting more focused on the action aspect, but the series stayed popular among gamers nonetheless. With the end of the sixth generation of consoles, so did the Onimusha franchise however.
After a whopping 17 years, Capcom has decided to revive the series by remastering the first Onimusha: Warlords for every major platform. There’s little doubt that the immense positive feedback Capcom has received for the modern remasters of Resident Evil 1 and 0 and not least the insane excitement of the full remake of Resident Evil 2.
Capcom has an immense catalog of games which the Japanese gaming giant has amassed over the company’s 39 year long lifespan. While it is always welcoming to see the birth of new IPs, the sad slumber of likewise once prominent games is a pain many a seasoned gamer has experienced.
Time will tell if Capcom is planning on remastering the other Onimusha games but our guess is, Warlords will be only the beginning.
