As part of IGN’s Summer of Gaming event, publisher Playstack has released lengthy new gameplay footage of their horror-inspired souls-like Mortal Shell. Alongside this, PC players can also look forward to a closed beta between July 3rd-10th.
Developer Cold Symmetry’s stab at the popular Souls formula in the form of Mortal Shell is shaping up to become something special. Not only is the oppressive art style adding even more tension and horror to the already punishing design, but inventive gameplay mechanics of taking over slain enemies sounds like an entirely different way to play altogether.
The dead litter this tattered landscape, but not all are without hope. The lost remains of defeated warriors are yours to discover. Awaken these Mortal Shells, occupy their bodies and significantly open your understanding to diverse masteries of combat.
Your path is guarded by desperate adversaries, devoted to inscrutable gods. Behold creatures both pitiable and grotesque, but do not let fear halt your journey. Muster your courage and face them down.
Combat is strategic and deliberate. You must commit your sword only when an opportunity opens. Calculate your parries to unleash devastating counterblows. Temporarily entomb your Mortal Shell in stone to block attacks, or play aggressive and use your stone-form to add brutal weight to your own sword swings.
Mortal Shell is slated to release across PC, PS4, and Xbox One later down the year but the announced closed beta will be PC-only. Interested gamers should follow the various social media accounts of the game listed below for a chance to get an invite.
