Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy will get a 4K remaster

Christopher Nolan is one of those filmmakers who put the utmost care into his work. His stories are well-written, he has an eye for detail, and he really wants his films presented in the highest quality. The acclaimed director often shoots on film over digital and is a film purist meaning he wants people to watch movies as they're intended, on a high-quality screen with good sound and not on your cell phone.

To help get us closer to achieving an at home theater-like experience, Nolan is remastering his movies in 4K. Speaking in an interview for his upcoming World War II film about the real life tense battle of Dunkirk which saw Allied troops being trapped in and on the beaches of the French town by Nazi forces, Nolan talked about why he likes 4K.

"Well, the wonderful thing about 4K technology is it's closer to the resolution that we shot the films on. Photochemically finished films of 35 millimeter have at least 6K resolution, IMAX upwards of 18K, so as home video formats keep evolving 4K, particularly 4K with HDR, it allows us to give someone at home the experience that is much, much closer to what it was like to see the original film prints as projected on film. I think it's a very exciting prospect, it's a long complicated process that we're doing right now but I think the results I'm seeing are very pleasing and very spectacular."

Nolan went on to confirm that he is "very much" involved in the process of remastering his films in 4K. There's no release date for these remasters but hopefully, we'll see it by the time the holiday season rolls around. It's not clear if all of his movies are getting the 4K treatment but it would be hard to imagine Warner Bros. would leave money on the table by not remastering The Dark Knight films, Inception, Interstellar, Momento, and his other films.
