Mobile isn't the only sector benefiting from microtransactions, which means you could start seeing more of them in your favorite games on consoles.
Research firm Superdata reports that console microtransactions are up. Last year, they contributed $352 million in sales and reached about 23 million consumers.
More gamers than ever before are making regular purchases through console games — around 1.9 million monthly active users compared to 1.6 million in 2012. Genres like first-person shooters and adventure games typically monetize better than others.
"As microtransactions become a standard feature to many game genres, so too will console games start to incorporate them," said Superdata.
"Hardware manufacturers will be receptive to developers and publishers with a focus on microtransactions and, in return, offer better visibility among console gamers. As we already know from mobile gaming, it is difficult to overstate the importance of a solid relationship with a platform holder."
