Consumer response to the Wii U has been ‘phenomenal’, according to Nintendo

Any concerns Ubisoft's CEO may have over the price of the Wii U may have been answered by Nintendo of America's Scott Moffitt, who told GI.biz that the consumer response to the Wii U has been "phenomenal". Moffitt didn't get into specific sales numbers, but did say they are getting great response – especially on the more expensive Deluxe Bundle which sells for $349.

"All I can say is that the response has been phenomenal and we're getting, especially in the higher priced deluxe set, that one's selling out incredibly quickly. That seems to indicate that the pricing's in a good spot and the proof is in the consumer response," Moffitt said, basically ruling out any chance of an early price cut, which Ubisoft's Yves Guillemot suggested when he revealed he was unhappy with the hardware's current price point.

It's hard to say where the Wii U stands in comparison to the Wii's launch, but Moffitt does expect Nintendo do handle the launch much better this time around.

"Certainly we've seen brisk pre-sales and that the phone calls have been coming into our headquarters for quite a while now asking for more and so we do expect high demand. But I can tell you this – on opening week we will have more systems on hand for the Wii U than we did for the launch of Wii. And, second, our replenishments will be more frequent this holiday time than during the Wii launch," Guillemot promised.

"But, having said all that, it's impossible to exactly predict demand, and so I can't say that we won't have some shortages out there and that people won't have to be a little patient with the replenishment truckload and shipments and boatloads to arrive."

The Wii U is set to launch on November 18 along with an impressive lineup of titles. If you haven't yet pre-ordered your unit, I suggest you do so relatively soon to avoid long delays.
