Cyberpunk 2077 sold a whopping 13m copies despite launch woes

Always bet on Corpo

A lot has been said about Cyberpunk 2077 since its launch, and truth be told, most of it was negative. Yet, despite the infamous launch controversy, publisher CD Projekt now reveals that over 13 million copies of the game went over the counters. And that takes refunds into the equation.

That figure instantly makes Cyberpunk 2077 one of the most successful game launches of all time. Furthermore, it also squashes any doubts that despite plenty of technical issues, the game is going to flop.

In case you’ve been living under a rock since the start of the month, that is a huge surprise. Ever since the game came out on December 10th, hundreds of videos showcasing the many bugs started gaining traction. Whether it’s Twitter or YouTube, it seems as if everyone only ever talks about how awful the state of the game is.

In fact, the situation on consoles was so bad that Sony delisted the game from their store and allowed owners to refund the game. The extent of which is rather unprecedented. Combined with the negative social media presence, you might expect Cyberpunk 2077 to become a financial disappointment, too.

Now, we know better. 13m is a huge figure for any game. Doubly so for one that experienced a woeful launch. To be fair, the majority of those sales happened before the game was even out. A staggering 8m users pre-ordered Cyberpunk 2077, with the majority happening on PC. Arguably the best version of the game, if you’re PC is up to the task.

CD Projekt states the 13m figure factors in refunds, which points towards many users not refunding their copy. It makes sense since the current-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 will get a free upgrade on the next-gen consoles. Since the latter already perform rather well even in pure backward compatibility mode, chances are the game will be solid once the proper next-gen update arrives.
