After a number of leaks and rumors prior to E3 2015, Dark Souls 3 was confirmed and revealed for an early 2016 release during the Xbox E3 press conference. The reveal trailer showed us the desolate landscapes that will soon become our playground.
Dark Souls 3 will once again have Hidetaka Miyazaki acting as the game's director, as he did with the original Dark Souls, Demon Souls and Bloodborne (he took a break to be supervisor for Dark Souls 2). With Bloodborne recently released and an expansion for it on the way, Miyazaki has his hands full with Dark Souls 3.
During a roundtable interview at E3 Miyazaki revealed that the development process for Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 overlapped, "The development timeframe of Bloodborne and Dark Souls overlapped by a year. But none of the team swapped over – just me. Some visual designers have also worked on both titles, though. That's an exception."
Miyazaki went on to reveal that Dark Souls 3 is "not the final product for the Dark Souls series," but a "turning point." Creating games based off of one specific element or "world view" can get old, so From Software will be turning onto other things.
"However, I believe it's the turning point for the Dark Souls series. First of all, Dark Souls has a really unique worldview. It's not a good idea, continuously releasing titles for this series because of that factor. And this will probably be the turning point of From Software as a whole – it's the last project we started working on before I became president. It's basically From Software, they started working on this project when it was an older generation. So it's a turning point. It'll be a turning point, but it's not final."
