After Guillermo del Toro and Ron Pearlman put their hearts on the line to get a third Hellboy film made, Lionsgate shot them down and immediately began working on a reboot with Stranger Things star David Harbour.
We got our first look at what Harbour would like as the red, monster slaying demon a few months ago and he seems to fit the part quite well. Harbour recently revealed to Variety that they have already wrapped production on the film and it was a fairly grueling experience for the aging actor.
“It was hard. I’m 40 years old, and I’m running around punching giants.”
Details are scarce regarding the plot for the film but that small quote may give us a hint at what we’re going to see in the film. In Hellboy lore, giants once inhabited England and played a central role in The Wild Hunt story arc. It’s possible that the Hellboy film will pull inspiration from this story and we’ll see the giant red anti-hero on the streets of England. We also know Ian McShane, Alice Monaghan, Daniel Dae Kim, Mila Jovovich, and Penelope Mitchell will all star in the film as various heroes and villains.
The film is well over a year away so we might have to wait until around San Diego Comic-Con in July to catch our first glimpse at some footage for the film but we have plenty of other superhero movies to tide us over in the meantime.
Hellboy will hit theaters on January 11th, 2019.
