The newly released DayZ standalone, a full-fledged retail version of the former Arma 2 zombie-survival mod, has already sold more than 800,000 copies. Not bad for a game that's still in Alpha as part of Steam Early Access.
"We (bohemia and I) had very ambitious plans for 2014 already," DayZ creator Dean Hall said on Reddit, "however this amount of sales was completely unexpected. Honestly, 250k within a quarter was what I would have considered a success. So to move nearly 800,000 in under a month is crazy."
"We'll be finalizing our roadmap in mid January, but it is safe to say that this kind of result will be having a very positive effect on that roadmap," Hall said of the game's development. In the first week of release alone, DayZ received three patches. The game is admittedly still buggy as hell, but a previously posted outline of "immediate future plans" for the game should calm any concerns.
