Destiny players will be able to upgrade their year-two equipment by breaking down comparable pieces of gear through a new Infuse mechanic, which will be introduced in The Taken King expansion.
The Infuse perk will be available on all Legendary and Exotic weapons and armor within The Taken King and future expansions. Existing weapons such as Vault of Glass or Crota’s End gear cannot be infused.
Each piece of equipment will have its own Infuse requirements, which will be pulled from newer tiers of that item class. Weapons can be Infused up to the current power cap; however, the materials and equipment—the “fuel,” as Executive Producer Mark Noseworthy put it,— necessary to do so will continue to evolve. UItimately, Infuse lets you hang onto your old favorites by keeping them on par with newer gear.
“I can keep walking these weapons and armor up, and keeping them current,” said Senior Designer Tyson Green. “We’re really trying to deliver on people being able to find things that they’re excited about, and keep them, and customize their character.” Noseworthy added that the mechanic's design is also rooted in the team's desire to diversify end-game loadouts.
