Dev turns Link into a girl in Wind Waker so his daughter can enjoy playing as a heroine

Developer Mike Hoye has decided to take The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and turn it into a slightly different experience for his daughter Maya. By employing a bit of hacking prowess, Hoye has managed to turn any mentions of Link into their respective female forms.

By using a hex editor, the dude totally altered the original disk image. He's made some cool little changes while still working within the game's limitations (text changes need to be exactly the same byte-by-byte length), like turning dialogue that originally read "my lad" or "master" into "milady." He switched "swordsman" to "swordmain" and so on. He also made it so that the main character, in this case a female Link, sets out for adventure to save her little brother.

"Well, there wasn’t anything to be done about it, certainly not anything easy, but as you might imagine I’m not having my daughter growing up thinking girls don’t get to be the hero and rescue their little brothers," said Hoye.

This is actually really cool, and it's great to know that this dad did something of this magnitude so that his little girl can play hero in one of the greatest games of all time.
