Diablo 3’s newly discovered area, Kanai’s Stomping Grounds, is more than an Easter egg. The March-exclusive level is also a tribute to Kevin “Kanai” Griffith, a lead Diablo 3 artist who passed away in October 2014.
“The Kanai event has actually been present since Patch 2.4.0 launched, but is only available during March—the real-world birth month of Kevin Kanai Griffith, the artist for whom Kanai’s Cube (and King Kanai) is named,” Community Manager Nevalistis wrote on the Diablo 3 forums.
Kanai’s Stomping Grounds lacks the traditional cow level’s Cow King, nor does it have as many loot chests. However, the secret area is the only where you can fight directly alongside the Spirit of Kanai, which is based on Griffith’s favorite character build.
To access the level, return to where Kanai’s Cube is originally found, in the Immortal Throne in Act Three’s Ruins of Sescheron. For the remainder of the month, the Spirit of Kanai guarding the area will open a portal to Kanai’s Stomping grounds when prompted.
