Disney Infinity, and all its infinite possibilities, cost $100 million

Earlier today, The Wall Street Journal reported that the cost of making Disney Infinity and its toys is $100 million, citing "people close to the company." Disney went all in with Disney Infinity, choosing to focus its resources on the huge, creative gaming platform and canning development on an Iron Man game and Star Wars titles.

Developed by Avalanche Software, Disney Infinity uses characters from Disney and Pixar films/TV shows. Currently, there are Play Sets for The Lone Ranger, The Incredibles, Monsters University, Cars and Pirates of the Caribbean with Toy Story in Space on the way. Other characters are from Frozen, Tangled, Wreck-it Ralph, Phineas and Ferb, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Mickey Mouse is on the way, too.

The big draw of the game is Toy Box mode, which allows players to create their own worlds, games and adventures in a sandbox environment, even applying logic. Disney Infinity also has a line of collectible toys tied to the game. Figures you buy are useable characters in-game, much in the same way Skylanders operates.

Disney Infinity releases this Sunday, August 18, for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, with mobile and tablet apps also in place.
