Disney Interactive is proving to be quite the thorn in The Walt Disney Company's side as the lastest financial results revealed another unprofitable for the gaming portion of the media conglomerate. For its second fiscal quarter ended March 30, 2013, Disney Interactive recorded a loss of $54 million. On the bright side, revenues for the quarter increased 8% to $195 million and segment operating results improved by $16 million.
The higher operating results which ultimately contributed to the overall losses, according to The Walt Disney Company, were due to "growth at our Japan mobile business from a licensing agreement that started in February 2012 and lower acquisition accounting expense at our social games business."
Surprisingly, there is no mention of the closing of Junction Point Studios which occurred earlier this year as a result of lackluster sales for Disney's Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two. There was also no mention of the company's forthcoming game/toy platform Disney Infinity which was recently delayed.
Former Junction Point creative director Warren Spector recently addressed the notion of a "failed" Epic Mickey franchise, telling us, "I don't consider them failures. They're the two best-selling games I've worked on!"
