That rumored Nintendo event has come and gone, and in its wake, we have Nintendo Labo. The company revealed that they are releasing a set of build-it-yourself toy accessories that will interact with the Nintendo Switch console using its motion detection and unique software. Nintendo Labo will allow parents and their kids to follow step-by-step instructions to build things like workable fishing poles, pianos, handlebars, and even a remote control creature.
Here’s the reveal trailer that dropped earlier today.
Nintendo Labo will come in two different kits, the Variety and Robot kits. The Variety kit will retail for $69.99 while the Robot kit will cost you $79.99, each shipping with the respective software you see in the trailer above as well as all of the pieces to build the requisite items.
What’s apparent about Nintendo Labo, is that it is not targeted for your typical gamer, instead choosing to focus on younger children and their parents. That’s not to say that there won’t be any fun to be had with Labo, but for what Nintendo is asking for them, this feels like a wait-and-see type of purchase.
Nintendo is no stranger to having real-world accessories complement their games. The Wii regularly had cheap plastic golf clubs and tennis rackets that you could attach to your Wii-mote for added immersion. Even Mario Kart Wii shipped with a wheel to enhance the steering mechanics; so it feels like Nintendo Labo is in many ways an iteration and a step forward on those previous ideas.
Nintendo Labo releases this year on April 20th, 2018.
