There have been numerous Dragon Ball Z fan films, usually short in length, showcasing that the action-packed combat of the anime could be translated to film, if done right. However, none have really been this emotionally charged.
This short film doesn't really follow any major plotline from the show, as it focuses on Trunks going up against Cell, and ultimately traveling back in time to save the world from ultimate destruction. This was a similar plotline in one of the DBZ movies where Trunks and Gohan went up against the two androids, but they proved to be too powerful, which prompted Trunks to go back in time and warn the Z Fighters of the impending doom.
Here we actually get a few shots of Krillin and Tien, the former who finally looks badass, and the latter who looks entirely too creepy with his third eye.
The fight scene against Cell himself is actually done pretty well, certainly for a fan film. The sound is amazing as well. However, it's the last five minutes that really pull on the heart strings. A broken and defeated Trunks listens to a tape left behind by Vegeta, while a flashback plays during this. I'll admit I teared up a bit. It's very well done. In true Vegeta form, he walks away to battle, without really saying goodbye to his family. A badass to the end.
The last bit after Trunks time travels is pretty awesome too, as we get a glimpse at Goku doing what he does best. I won't spoil it. Give it a watch.
