Dead Island 2 will be expanding the series’ multiplayer from four-man parties to eight, game director Bernd Diemer confirmed today.
“You can play alone if you want,” he told GameTrailers, “but as soon as you’re connected and you’re willing to play with other people, they will join your world, your server.”
While multiplayer is a strictly cooperative endeavor, there’s room for some coopetition. “We didn’t want to make a competitive game where it’s about killing other players and racking up a kill count, because that’s not Dead Island,” Diemer said. “It’s mostly about having fun and playing with other people.” To promote this, players will be able to compete for resources and other goodies like exclusive weapons and vehicles, but not kill each other.
Dead Island 2 will release for PC, PS4 and Xbox One spring 2015 and was announced just a few days ago during Sony’s E3 conference.
