E3 2019: Final Fantasy 7 Remake to debut first on PS4 next March

Sony benefits like it's 1997

Hours before Square Enix holds their own E3 press conference, the Japanese game publisher decided to release a new trailer for their highly anticipated remake of their seminal cult JRPG remake of Final Fantasy 7. Watch it here!

There’s no denying the impact Final Fantasy 7 had on the gaming industry when it released a lifetime ago in 1997. It’s not just the game itself either, which ushered a mature epic JRPG adventure in 3D, all with – at the time – cutting-edge CG cutscenes and voice-acting. You have to remember that at the time, games in the genre were only known to exist with 2D sprites and text blobs. The jump to the PlayStation 1 enabled Square not only to shift into 3D but also ramp up production quality by using the large CD storage media.

Well over two decades later, Final Fantasy 7 still remains high on the list of JRPG gamers and is a must-play for fans of the genre. After years of wishful thinking that a true remake would happen, Square Enix finally announced a true remake of the cult classic way back in 2015. Many years have passed since and besides a few trailers, we didn’t really get to see much of the game.

Now, just hours before their own E3 show, Square Enix has released a new trailer for the Final Fantasy 7 remake in which we learn about the release date and platform. On March 3rd 2020, the remake will make its debut on the PlayStation 4. This of course doesn’t mean that it will stay a PS4 exclusive, but we rather think it’ll be a timed exclusivity before it reaches other platforms.
