This past weekend at Star Wars Celebration, fans were expecting Disney to reveal the third planned Star Wars spin-off film. Many were hoping the third film would center around the legendary Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi, with Ewan McGregor coming back to reprise his role. Sadly, no such announcement was made.
Many also wondered why McGregor didn't come to Celebration as many of the actors from all the films showed up for the 40th anniversary of the sci-fi series. McGregor has previously expressed interest in returning to the role but it seems Disney has not contacted him about making the film.
"There’s no official offer, and I haven’t met them about it or anything," McGregor told Entertainment Weekly. "But I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do it if they wanted to do it. It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes. I think they’ve got films to make until the 2020s, so I don’t think it’s going to happen soon if it happens at all."
Lucasfilm exec Kathleen Kennedy recently mentioned that the next spin-off film will be revealed sometime this summer, so it seems somewhat unlikely they're planning an Obi-Wan film for 2020.
"My hope would be sometime around the summer. I never want to predict the creative process because it is its own thing, so we’re in the midst of those discussions right now.” said Kennedy when speaking with MTV.
