Fans eagerly awaiting news regarding Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 should look to this year's E3. In a Q&A session online, Rockstar Games told fans more information about GTA 5 will be coming in a "few months' time".
Of course, a few months is a pretty vague response, but looking at the list of big upcoming gaming events, E3 2012 makes the most sense in relation to the comments.
"First of all, we’d like to again thank you and everyone out there for the amazing response to the debut Grand Theft Auto V trailer. We know that there are a ton of questions you all have about the game, including release date and lots else," Rockstar said in response to fans requests. "Right now, we are very hard at work on the game and are excited as well to show and tell you more as development progresses – expect that we'll be talking much more about GTA V starting at some point in a few months’ time."
Sure, we have the Game Developers Conference in early March which is pretty big, but odds are they will use that time to promote their upcoming game Max Payne 3, which was recently pushed back to May. It wouldn't make sense for them to pass over Max Payne 3 for a game that doesn't even have an estimated time.
To me, it makes the most sense for Rockstar Games to hold off any news regarding Grand Theft Auto 5 until June's E3 convention. Use GDC to promote Max Payne 3, and once the game release in May, follow it up with HUGE Grand Theft Auto news at E3 the next month.
By waiting until E3 in June for GTA 5 news, Rockstar Games will effectively dominate the media for a good portion of the Spring and Summer months. This sets up Rockstar to potentially announce a release window for Grand Theft Auto 5 at E3 – perhaps late 2012?
Take-Two recently said in an earnings conference call that GTA 5 will "likely" arrive before March 2012, but that the release window is still "far off".
Right now, everything we "think" we know about GTA 5 is purely speculation and hearsay. But I do firmly believe E3 2012 will be the time for big Grand Theft Auto 5 news.
