Worldwide search engine Google shared today the top searches from 2015. There are more than 40 categories for its year-end lists, ranging from overall top trending searches to the top trending people, and, of course, video games and movies.
While "Lamar Odom" was atop Google's top trending searches of the year, surprisingly, Bethesda's Fallout 4 also cracked the top 10, along with "Jurassic World," "American Sniper," and Ronda Rousey. You may be wondering how a game like Fallout 4 topped the list over other blockbusters such as Call of Duty and Star Wars Battlefront, but it could have something to do with how Google defines trending queries.
“We define the trending queries as the searches that had the highest spike in traffic over a sustained period in 2015 as compared to 2014,” a Google spokesperson said, explaining that tracking trends for the year, versus its top searches, is a more accurate way to determine the topics and people that grew in popularity year-over-year.
With virtually no news on Fallout 4 prior to Bethesda's surprise reveal at E3 in June, it's no surprise to see it make the list. Before 2015, there was hardly any talk of Fallout 4 aside from your occasional rumor and leak. Then, boom, Bethesda dropped the announcement and it became one of the biggest games of the year.
Getting a bit more specific, Google also revealed the top trending video games of 2015. Surprisingly, it's not a AAA blockbuster topping the list, but instead the wildly popular mobile/browser game Agar.io. Fallout 4 is second on the list, followed by Mortal Kombat X, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, and Star Wars Battlefront rounding out the top five. Here's the top 10:
