Fatal Frame 2 returns from the dead on May 6

One of the most critically successful survival-horror games is coming back to life on the PlayStation Network next week.

Returning on May 6, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is one of the most praised entries in the series. It debuted on PlayStation 2 in 2003 and came to Xbox as a director's cut one year later. A remake for Wii called Project Zero 2: Wii Edition was made but never reached North America.

Although Fatal Frame 2 is often considered the scariest game ever made, series director Makoto Shibata wrote on the PlayStation Blog that since "we received lots of feedback that players got too scared to complete the [first] game, we shifted our attention to making the storyline more interesting, to encourage such players to overcome the scariness in wanting to see the end of the story."

Shibata also mentioned that the game's difficult interpretations and outcomes are "a reflection of what happened when I was trying to figure out the meanings behind [my] dream," which inspired the storyline.

The first Fatal Frame hit the PlayStation Network early last month. It costs $9.99.
