Final Fantasy’s lead character gets toned down for over-the-top sexiness

Too sexy for FF, so sexy it hurt...character design.

Square Enix has been working on a new mobile Final Fantasy game, Mevius Final Fantasy, for a while now. Throughout the development process they have released various aspects of the game, gauged the communities reaction and applied the feedback to Mevius.

Some of the feedback honed in on a certain character's sexiness. The main character, an Onion Knight, who is referred to as Wal (the player can name them whatever they want) had armor that showed a lot of skin, and feedback had Square Enix taking steps to cover Wal up — much to the dismay of Mevius' project leader Naoki Hamaguchi and managing producer Hiroki Okayama.

Both Hamaguchi and Okayama would prefer that Wal would wear his original armor instead of the new more conservative armor, saying, “But I want that naked outfit,” and “He looks like a model…You can see the body line of his lower back and hips.”

Yes, Wal is a male character.

The revealing outfit has been de-sexified (although the outfit remains backless for the most part), but it might make a come-back according to the game's producer (Yoshinori Kitase): “If enough people say they like those hiplines, then we might bring the original costume back.”
