Ghostbusters 3 is not a parody, will not recreate the old movies, but will acknowledge them

I was a little weary of a Ghostbusters 3 without Bill Murray, but director Paul Feig is saying all the right things to ease my worries. Potentially getting Melissa McCarthy on board doesn't hurt either.

While promoting his new movie with McCarthy, Spy (starring McCarthy, Jude Law, Jason Statham and Rose Byrne), Feig offered an update on Ghostbusters 3. Regarding the first two films, Feig said that the new one won't parody them, but it'll have some nods towards them.

"We're not recreating the old movie but we want to do just enough fun nods that he fans will go, 'Oh, okay, they're acknowledging that the other movie existed. I like to watch parodies, but I don't want to do them because they're too referential. Comedy that's too referential has such a short shelf life, whereas comedy that's based around characters will be relatable 2000 years from now because people won't change that much."

Then there's the hate coming from fans, which is understandable given Murray's reluctance to make a third Ghostbusters — although he did say it should have an all-female cast. Feig commented, "The problem with the internet is that if 500 really angry men start bombarding me, I think, 'Oh god, everybody hates this movie,' but then you realize that it's only 500 people. I don't block anyone out or not read that stuff because I want to know what the most hardcore hater fan's problem is."

Another good answer, Mr. Feig. Though Ghostbusters 3 doesn't have an official title, isn't even close to having casting finished, and doesn't have a release date in mind, Feig also explained why he wants to make a new Ghostbusters.

"A lot of people ask why I didn't create my own thing but Ghostbusters never ran out of steam, it's such a great idea. It's such a fun franchise so why not bring it to a new generation? The old movie is never going to not exist. It's not my plan to erase every copy! Hopefully they can all live together."

Feel better after reading Paul Feig's comments?
