We're all well aware of the female-driven Ghostbusters reboot coming out next year, but a new report from Variety claims that Sony has also begun work on an animated Ghostbusters movie.
According to sources, the animated film will be produced by Ivan Reitman through his Montecito Picture Company. Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson and MIchael Lachance will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.
Unfortunately, no actual plot details were offered, so we don't know if the animated film will be tied to Paul Feig's upcoming reboot.
Animation is nothing new to the Ghostubsters franchise. Following the success of the first film in 1984, Columbia Pictures Television launched The Real Ghostbusters animated television series, created by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. We also had the Extreme Ghostubsters animated series in 1997, created as a follow-up. Set years after the end of The Real Ghostbusters, this show featured a team of younger college-level Ghostbusters led by original veteran Ghostubster Egon Spengler. I was too young to notice (or care) about the overall reception to either of the shows, but I do remember enjoying both of them as a kid, so like my view on Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot, I say give it a chance.
