Google’s Project Glass teases a promising future, and is freaking awesome

Welcome to the future everybody, or at least a glimpse of the future.

Today, Google gave us a taste of what's to come, unveiling a long-rumored concept called "Project Glass".  Imagine all of the information that was once at your fingertips via smartphone, now directly displayed in front of you with a see-through lens.  Sound complicated?  It definitely looks it.

A team within the Google[x] group has started this Project Glass to build this technology, "one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment."

Through this wearable device that resembles eyeglasses, you can see everything from text messages to maps to reminders.  The concept video released today even shows that the device may be capable of showing video chats, providing turn-by-turn directions, taking photos, and recording messages – al through simple voice commands.  Of course, this is just concept.

The team working on Project Glass, announced they are just sharing this information with us now because they want "to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input."  In other words, they want to gather outside feedback – and so far, feedback seems pretty good.  As of now they only have design photos and a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do, but it has definitely sparked conversation.

According to CNN, the "heads-up display" glasses were created in Google's Google X lab, which is the same division responsible for the driverless car and the space elevator which is currently being developed.

Project Glass is still in the early stages of development.  Google has no timeline for when the device will be released, but Google X engineers are beginning to use prototypes outside of the lab.

As you can see in the video, the initial design shows a video camera and a small piece of glass over the right eye, with no lens on the left.  According to the Google+ page for Project Glass, this was intentional.

"We think technology should work for you—to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don’t."

Questions still remain, of course, like what type of long term brain tumor is this going to give me?  Still, I'd argue the tumor is worth the feeling of being in a sci-fi movie.  I think Google is off to a pretty solid start so far.
