For most developers, they have to release one or more games each year to be able to make enough money to stay in business. For Rockstar Games, they've been able to coast off the success of Grand Theft Auto V for nearly four years without releasing a new game.
Last time we got numbers on the sales of GTA V, the game was at 70 million copies sold. That was in November. Now, the total is up to 80 million just six months later. The game has managed to consistently be in the monthly NPD where it usually ends up being on one of the ten best-selling games of the month. Grand Theft Auto V has continued to sell due to it not only being a fantastic video game but also due to the years of online support from Rockstar Games. Substantial free updates have been released regularly adding new vehicles, weapons, clothes, and modes like heists.
Rockstar was set to release a sequel to their very successful western title, Red Dead Redemption, later this year but they confirmed the game will be delayed and won't release until Spring of 2018. Rockstar will take some notes from Grand Theft Auto V and will add an online mode to Red Dead Redemption 2 similar to GTA's. If the game manages to hold the quality that Rockstar games typically have, it's likely the studio will have another wildly popular title on their hand.
