The rumors are true — the upcoming next-gen (err, current-gen?) remake of Grand Theft Auto 5 will offer players the option to play in a first-person perspective. Confirmed today by IGN, the new first-person mode is exclusive to the PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions of the game, which is due out November 18.
“It’s a very intense, in-your-face experience… literally,” says GTA 5 animation director Rob Nelson told IGN. “Obviously, we felt like one of the most compelling things you could do to make an experience people have had before feel different was the new first-person mode."
Nelson continued to explain that Rockstar had always been interested in a first-persno mode, adding that "it's never really been an option for us." He explained that Rockstar was "too busy making the game," that they didn't have the time to add this new perspective. The power of the new-gen consoles also helped.
“We were out of memory on the old consoles for animations. We were constantly fighting about what we could have and what we could still push in, and what other areas you could steal memory back from – audio, art, maps – for animation. So we could’ve added all the atoms to make a first-person mode to the level we wanted. We weren’t sure the world would have held up the way we would’ve wanted it to," Nelson said.
Other features in the GTA 5 remake include new weapons, vehicles, and activities, additional wildlife, denser traffic, a new foliage system, enhanced damage and weather effects, and much more.
