GTA 5 sales in UK surpass 3.6 million copies

Calling Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 5 a success would be an understatement. The game which generated $800 million in worldwide sales in just a single day (and $1 billion after just three days) has sold over 3.6 million copies across the UK.

The sales figures come as part of a 2013 preliminary report by the Entertainment Retailers Association, via CVG, which also noted GTA 5 has the opportunity to surpass Mario Kart Wii as the best-selling console game of all time (not bundled). In early November, it was estimated that Grand Theft Auto 5 had about 29 million copies sold, well within reach of Mario Kart Wii's 34 million units. If GTA 5 hasn't already surpassed that figure, it will likely do so once new DLC releases alongside the long-rumored PC version, which Rockstar has yet to confirm.

Also keeping GTA 5 relevant is the fact that Rockstar now allows users to create their own custom deathmatches and races in the games online multiplayer mode, Grand Theft Auto Online. The Content Creator tools was made available for free in early December as a way for the GTA Online community to offer their own unique twist on multiplayer modes that would otherwise seem generic. Rockstar even goes so far as to highlight some noteworthy user-generated content. The first batch of "Rockstar Verified" user content was announced last week.

I still think GTA 5's sales could use a boost from a PC or next-gen version, but Rockstar has remained tight-lipped on either possibility.
