Oh how I wish I was at Comic-Con. I'm hearing tons about this upcoming Guillermo del Toro movie Pacific Rim. Now I just saw the Comic-Con 2012 exclusive poster for it; it has me even more intrigued.
First off, Guillermo del Toro is directing it, so you know it's going to be visually impressive. Pacific Rim stars Idris Elba (in a role that originally Tom Cruise was linked to), Ron Perlman (who worked with del Toro on the Hellboy movies), charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and… Charlie Day? The guy from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia? I guess we know who the comic relief is going to be.
So what is Pacific Rim about? It's about humans battling an alien attack on Earth by piloting giant robots. Sold. Anything that even sounds like it is kinda like Exosquad is a win for me. The official synopsis from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures about this sci-fi action adventure is:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
Is it possible for me to be even more sold? This movie and all its parts are adding up to be an epic film. And a little geography lesson here: the Pacific Rim refers to places around the edge of the Pacific Ocean — so the aliens are likely to be emerging from the Pacific Ocean.
Pacific Rim is set for a July 12, 2013 release date. Stay tuned for more information.
